What You'll Learn

Enrolling in the Columbia Student Health Insurance Plan
Columbia University requires most students to have comprehensive health insurance as part of their enrollment in the university. The Columbia University Student Health Insurance Plan, also known as the Columbia Plan, works with Columbia Health to provide consistent and efficient care. The plan always pays benefits in accordance with applicable New York State insurance laws.
Eligibility
All new full-time domestic students and international students wishing to use an alternate health insurance plan must submit a waiver request. Incoming part-time domestic students are not automatically enrolled in the Columbia Plan but may request enrollment by the deadline and are encouraged to do so. Enrolling also requires payment of the Full-time Columbia Health and Related Services Fee, which provides access to the services offered by Columbia Health.
Visa holders (any student other than a US Citizen or Permanent Resident) must enroll in the Columbia Plan, regardless of the number of enrolled credits. Some visa holders may be eligible for a waiver when covered by a plan that meets the university's requirements.
Student-veterans may be eligible for health care benefits through the Department of Veterans Affairs for illnesses and injuries related to their service. Full-time student-veterans will be enrolled in the Columbia Plan and billed the insurance premium unless a waiver request is submitted via the Patient Portal and approved by the appropriate deadline.
Enrollment
Each academic year, all registered full-time students need to either confirm enrollment in the Columbia Plan or request a waiver from mandatory enrollment (eligible students only). Students who do not take action by the deadline will be automatically enrolled in the Columbia Plan.
For new Summer Term students, open enrollment for health insurance, voluntary vision insurance, and voluntary dental insurance begins on May 1 and ends on June 30. For the Fall 2025 semester, the enrollment period begins on July 15, 2025.
Students with existing insurance coverage that meets the waiver criteria but missed the deadline may submit a late Insurance Waiver Request.

Out-of-network services
Columbia University offers a range of health insurance plans for its students and staff. The Columbia University Student Health Insurance Plan is provided by Aetna Student Health and offers benefits such as $0 copay for certain medications and access to a range of in-network specialists.
If you are a student and elect to receive care from an out-of-network provider, you will be responsible for any charges in excess of the allowed amount, as well as the applicable deductible and co-insurance. It is important to note that referrals from your Columbia Health primary care or mental health provider are mandatory when seeking non-emergency off-campus services. If a referral is not obtained prior to seeking care, services will be reimbursed at the out-of-network benefit level, resulting in higher out-of-pocket costs.
To maximize your benefits and minimize out-of-pocket expenses, it is recommended to select an in-network provider from the Aetna network. You can search for in-network specialists on the Aetna Student Health website and use the Doc Find tool to check if a provider accepts Aetna Columbia Student Health Insurance.
For staff, Columbia University offers a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) through UHC. Most out-of-network services are covered at 60% after an annual deductible of $850 per member. It is important to note that eligible expenses are determined by the Claims Administrator's reimbursement policy, and you may need to obtain precertifications from UHC for certain treatments.
Overall, while Columbia University's insurance plans offer some coverage for out-of-network services, it is generally more cost-effective to utilize in-network providers whenever possible.
