BNC National Bank has a long history of acquisitions and mergers. The bank was originally known as Bank of North Carolina and was based in High Point, North Carolina. It was founded in 1991, starting out in a temporary location in a trailer in Thomasville, North Carolina, before moving to a permanent home in Fall 1992. In 1995, it began using a BNC mark, and in 2001, it merged with Kernersville-based Independence Bank. In 2010, the bank expanded to South Carolina, taking over the failed Beach First National Bank in a deal arranged by the FDIC. In 2011, it expanded to Raleigh, North Carolina, and Greenville, South Carolina, and in 2012, it opened a Charlotte branch. That same year, it also took over Carolina Federal Savings Bank of Charleston, South Carolina, and purchased First Trust Bank of Charlotte, adding three branches and $374 million in deposits.
