TRICARE's four pharmacy options

Military pharmacies are available to fill prescriptions for TRICARE beneficiaries. There is no cost to fill covered specialty prescriptions at a military pharmacy. You can find a list of military pharmacies near you by visiting the TRICARE website. Some military pharmacies may stock your specialty drug, but it is recommended to check with your local military pharmacy first.

TRICARE Home Delivery is another option for beneficiaries to receive their specialty medications. Accredo, an industry-leading specialty pharmacy, offers expanded services at no additional cost beyond your TRICARE cost-share. You can see which medications are eligible for home delivery by using the TRICARE Formulary Search Tool.

Retail network pharmacies are also available for TRICARE beneficiaries. There are more than 41,000 locations in the U.S. and U.S. Territories, including the U.S. Virgin Islands. To fill your prescription at a retail network pharmacy, you can ask your provider to send your prescription electronically or hand-carry your written prescription to the pharmacy. You will be required to show your uniformed services ID card.

In some cases, you may need to fill your prescription at a non-network pharmacy. If you fill your prescription at a non-network pharmacy, you may be responsible for the full cost of the prescription and point-of-service fees will apply. However, beneficiaries can file a claim for a partial reimbursement of the cost of their medication when filling at a non-network pharmacy.

Retail pharmacies

TRICARE has four pharmacy options, including retail pharmacies, which are available worldwide, although there are some limits overseas. In some cases, overseas retail pharmacies may be your only option. You may have to pay the total amount upfront and then file a claim with the overseas contractor for reimbursement. Active-duty service members will get a full reimbursement, while active-duty family members will get a full reimbursement when enrolled in the TRICARE Overseas Program Prime or TRICARE Overseas Program Prime Remote. All others will get a partial reimbursement.

There are more than 41,000 TRICARE retail network pharmacy locations in the US and US Territories, including the US Virgin Islands. There are currently no network pharmacies in American Samoa.

If you fill your specialty medication at an in-network retail pharmacy, you will pay the in-network retail copayment. You should contact the pharmacy of your choice to ask if your medication is available. You can also visit the TRICARE formulary search tool (FST) to see if you are taking a specialty medication.

Retail network pharmacies are easy to use. Ask your provider to send your prescription electronically, or hand-carry your written prescription to the pharmacy. You will be required to show your uniformed services ID card.

If you don't fill your prescriptions at a certified pharmacy, you're responsible for the full cost of the prescription. Prescriptions purchased from and/or billed by your healthcare provider's office will not be cost-shared by TRICARE. Manson Drug and South Star Pharmacy are not certified as of October 1, 2011, and November 1, 2011, respectively. Claims with a date of service before these dates will be honored and processed.

Military pharmacies

TRICARE is the U.S. military's health care program and functions as government-managed health insurance. It is often considered the gold standard for medical coverage. The TRICARE Pharmacy Program provides prescription drugs for eligible beneficiaries in a safe, easy, and affordable way. TRICARE has four pharmacy options: Military Pharmacies, Home Delivery, Network Pharmacies, and Non-Network Pharmacies. Each option is available worldwide, but there are some limits overseas.

If you are enrolled in any TRICARE health plan, you are automatically enrolled in the TRICARE Pharmacy Program. All persons taking select maintenance medications are limited to two refills at retail pharmacies and otherwise must use TRICARE Pharmacy Home Delivery or a military pharmacy. TRICARE also fills prescriptions for beneficiaries while travelling. Those travelling domestically can have their prescriptions filled at a military pharmacy or TRICARE network pharmacy, get home delivery, or go to a non-network pharmacy and file a claim for partial reimbursement. If travelling overseas, beneficiaries can have their prescriptions filled at a military pharmacy or go to an overseas retail pharmacy and file a claim for reimbursement.

The TRICARE Military Treatment Facility Locator allows you to find the nearest MTF by ZIP code or military installation. MTFs provide care for service members and their families. TRICARE also covers the cost of renting or purchasing equipment to improve your quality of life. There are no longer limits on the number of times beneficiaries can get SUD treatment, smoking cessation counselling, or outpatient treatment per week. TRICARE also removed a previous requirement for authorization after the eighth outpatient mental health or SUD visit.
